Week 8 Review

At the halfway mark, I figured it would be a good idea to back up the blog and the storybook site. I would be severely put out if I lost all my work!

For the weekly announcements, Oct 18th had an inclusion that really caught my eye.
I played it for a few rounds. My highest score was 400. I know I can do better!

Hopefully planning ahead like this will help make it easier to find something to read when it comes time to do that day's diary!

Week 11 - Mabinogion
Week 12 - Faerie Queene

Week 13 - Fables of La Fontaine
Week 14 - Russian Folktales

Reflections: Looking Foward

Looking forward to the next eight weeks in this class. I want to work on the storytelling more. I have missed several just because I was unable to come up with a retelling idea I was happy with. I also want to leave better comments. Sometimes I have not left any in a week, just because I worry I may come off too snippy when I am not feeling well. The worst of the illness seems to be behind me, so I look forward to being able to interact with people again and not have to worry about policing my tone!

I will miss this class when it is over, but the tools learned will always come in handy. Feeling stumped in writing? Rewrite something you like! Rewrite something you don't like so that you do like it! Understanding what makes things work and not work is a big part of being able to tell a compelling story.

Reflections: Looking Back

I have really enjoyed the class these past eight weeks. It is so different from other classes I have taken, even the other Mythology class I took a few years back. We aren't focused on essays, on regurgitating academic facts but instead, we focus upon synthesizing the classic with our own imaginations.

I love to write. I've been writing for a very long time. However, recently I have not been able to focus on writing due to "reasons" and this class has been a godsend. I have to write for it. Sometimes I can't and miss the storytelling for that week, but it's ok! The stuff I do write usually turns out pretty good and it's really helped me get out of the slump.

The Storybook project is probably the best showcase for this. It is a project that is small enough that I can actually finish, and isn't so overwhelming that I can't tackle it on a weekly basis. I'm excited about it, excited to work on it, excited to receive feedback and make it better. There is always room for improvement and it has a ripple effect into everything else you write.

I tend to do most of the assignments on the day they are due (with comments on the weekends). This may seem silly, but it helps me keep track of what day it is. I have been home with an illness most of the semester, so having assignments on certain days has really helped in keeping me grounded.
