Reading Diary A Wk 4 - Santal Folklore

Indian Leopard. Wikipedia.

For this week's reading diary, I've gone with the Santal. The tales are all new to me and it's really interesting to see similar traits or themes that seem to show up all over the world!

+ Oilman's Bullock
This tale is so weird. I'm not sure there is any underlying meaning to it, as the oilman prospered and then some people overheard his bulls talking? And so the older bull was set to fight an elephant and he won, so the oilman treated him well but then he DIED a month later? Like? It's a neat little tale but it's trippy.

+ The Ghormuhas
An interesting tale with a nice twist of it being passed down from the person IN the tale, who escaped. It's always interesting to see information on how mythical creatures live, which is what most of this tale is about. The other part is the boy outwitting them and managing to escape.

+ Raibar and the Leopard
Another tale of human outwitting an animal. It is interesting that while cats are seen as normally intelligent, this is the second tale in Part A of a human outwitting a leopard. This leopard however, never realised the man had tried to kill it, but it became better off through his actions. Interesting correlation between this and raibars apparently not being attacked by leopards because of it.
