Reading Diary Extra Wk 3 - Georgian Folktales

For my extra reading this week, I went with part A of Georgian Folktales.

+ Master and Pupil
At first the story seems to be about the father, but the real main character is the son. After gaining his shapeshifting powers from the devil, he uses it to gain money for his father, but when he falls back into the clutches of the devil, he uses the powers he gained from his master to outwit him in a long battle of wits.

+ The Serpent and the Peasant
This tale was really strange to me. That the peasant was lying and cruel to the snake until the end, but the snake kept helping was different than most other tales involving animals and humans. Usually, when a human does something stupid like that, the animal turns it into a moral. At the end of this tale, however, the snake reveals it knew the peasant would be a jerk as it was 'no fault of his own', he was like the other people in the kingdom. What a nice snake.

+ Two Brothers
This tale is quite a ride. The brother that is so cunning gets all the rewards and no pitfalls. He tricks his brother into sharing his food with him, then runs off before he has to do the same. Then he learns some juicy tidbits from some animals and profits greatly. When his brother asks how he did it, the cunning one told him. Although he told the other brother not to go, he did it anyways. When the animals reassembled, they complained that when they told their stories, someone had did what they said. They figured out someone must have been listening and found the poor brother and killed him. Sucks to be that brother.
