My Pinterest can be found on my sidebar.
+ Bookmarks:
I have 4 folders on my toolbar. One is for everything and has tons of folders and subfolders (it's where I keep years of information tucked away). The websites listed within are things I visit often; Amazon, Tumblr, Facebook, Netflix, Pinterest, etc. One click away.
The next folder is for my writing and the curation of those resources. Random generators for names, places or ideas. Directories I've made to store my information for different subjects or projects.
The third is for school. It has important links that are easy to get to (Ozone, my subfolder in Google Docs for classwork, D2L). It is short and sweet.
The fourth folder is for things that are important and need to be sorted, or kept for a short time and then deleted, but aren't so important that they need to be out on the toolbar proper.
This leaves my bar open for things that are so important they can't be in a folder. Things I need to look at now, things that are relevant short term and don't need to be stored after I'm finished using them.
A screenshot of my pinboards (including the secrets!)
Most of my boards are made up of things I pin to try later, like recipes, sewing instructions or crafting tutorials. That's pretty par for the course for pinterest. Here's what I like to do with the place, though.
Did you know you can make secret boards? Nobody can see what you pin to them (not even the original pinner) unless you invite them. I use secret boards to make visual collages for projects. Trying to work on a character's clothing and hair styles and their signature colours? Board with pins that hold a design element. Looking to describe a setting? Board with landscapes that inspire you.
I'm not a big fan of twitter. I feel like most of what is seen is highly commercialised. It can be useful as a fast social media site when things happen quickly (such as recent events) because it gives individual people a voice and a chance to be heard through trending hashtags. Unfortunately, it gives individual people a voice and a chance to be heard through trending hashtags. Some people are obnoxious just because they can be.
Maybe there are neat things to be found and I haven't been pointed in their direction.
+ Known
I've never heard of it before and I shall poke around!
Oh wow, this is fascinating, Whitney! I am so glad you use folders already. I really wasn't sure what to expect when asking people about bookmarks, but I will be really happy if it turns out everybody already has these great strategies for organizing them! It's something I really struggled with myself — the demise of Delicious, which was a social bookmarking service, really hit me hard... but then Pinterest came along and that is something that I have liked so much!
ReplyDeleteAnd I love the idea of using a Board to develop a character... wow! That is such a great idea! I have a book project I really want to work on someday (yes, I am such a nerd: I want to do a Star Trek book of Aesop's fables, with all my favorite characters and species in the Star Trek universe adapting Aesop's fables for their own purposes)... and having a Board for each character to save resources would be perfect.
As for Twitter, I happy to say that I lead a blissful life free of anything obnoxious there: I just follow museums and writers and educators who inspire me! And lots of OU stuff. One of my very favorite writers is SUPER active there, which is just amazing: he's like a real person to me now, way more so than he was when I knew only his books. He writes about India: William Dalrymple ... what is especially cool is that through him I got connected to lots of people in India whom I have never met otherwise. They share a LOT of great artwork every day, so beautiful.
Anyway, this sounds great! I can tell you are going to be able to make fantastic use of Pinterest for this class, and if you share your favorite finds each week, then we will all get the benefit of that. EXCITING! :-)
